Downy & Hairy Woodpeckers in Concord Township OH, 2007

Downy Woodpeckers and Hairy Woodpeckers are very similar in appearance, and can be troublesome to identify when seen alone. Here are several photos of them together on the same peanut feeder, where they can be compared. The smaller bird is the Downy Woodpecker, and the larger is the Hairy Woodpecker. The Hairy has a longer beak in comparison to its head size.
